about
My work expresses a dialogue with the vessel and its associations as container, a space defined by walls or boundaries, and the unapparent yet intimate relationship between the ceramic vessel and architecture - the enclosed spaces we eat out of and the enclosed spaces we inhabit. The vessel evokes for me principles of womanhood as they are defined by nature - processes of gestation to birth, giving life and nurturing, gifting the world with love and beauty, and the acts of holding and letting go.
In this context I give voice to both UTILITY and AESTHETICS. Utility is given shape in my production work, under the label Artisan Eatware, aimed at the display and enjoyment of seasonal foods, be it in the surrounds of a restaurant or around a delicious kitchen table at home. In my art work I delight in the aesthetic exploration of forms as carriers of a personal narrative whose beauty stems from their simplicity and understatement.
I work in stoneware and porcelain, hand built or wheel thrown, fired to 1260 C. Increasingly I am enjoying creating my own clay bodies, where I can alter colour and texture at will. Surface finishes are always kept to the minimal with slips and glazes intending to define form rather than compete with it.
